As much as possible I have been using my own pictures to illustrate the various crops in the World Crops Database. Some of these are not very good, but it was all I had.
I have realized that the database now contains so many crops that I cannot expect to get them all in front of my camera. Asking visitors of the website to send me pictures (see: Crops without images) has not yielded much. So I have been looking for another way of finding images and that’s how I found Flickr, Wikimedia and Pixabay.
Flickr
On the Flickr Creative Commons pages I have already found several beautiful images which are now used to illustrate some of the crops in the database.
Wikimedia commons
Another place where I sometimes find pictures is Wikimedia Commons.
In most cases I use photos by others that have the Attribution License. Attribution means: You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work – and derivative works based upon it – but only if they give you credit.
Pixabay
Also Pixabay is a good source of free images. Generally I use only pictures of Pixabay when they are marked CC0 Creative Commons, Free for commercial use, and No attribution required.
With every image I use in the World Crops Database I include, when needed, a caption that shows the name of the owner and which also includes a link to the photo on Flickr or Wikimedia or elsewhere. With my own pictures, or pictures where no attribution is required I don’t include any credit information. However, I may have made some mistakes, so if you are the copyright owner of one of these photo’s and you don’t agree with the way I have used the photo, please contact me and I will immediately remove the photo.
Here are links to various licenses:
