The World Crops Database

The World Crops Database is a collection of more than 600 cereals, fruits, vegetables and other crops that are grown by farmers all over the world.

With my background in (tropical) agriculture I started a couple of years ago a database to keep track of the many different types of vegetables and fruits. Bit by bit I added more and more crops and eventually I decided to move my data from MS Access to MySQL and build a website for it.

When I started, the database was just a list of a few well known fruits and vegetables. But now the database includes many different types of plants that are (or were) grown by farmers. Some are very rare indeed. It’s a work in progress and I will keep adding new agricultural crops and new names as and when I find them.

In the beginning, I only recorded scientific names and common names in English and Dutch. Later I started adding more languages (French, Spanish, German, Italian) and I started to put the crops in different categories. I don’t know yet what’s next. Any suggestions are welcome.

Definition of Agricultural Crop

Agricultural crops are plants that are grown or deliberately managed by man for certain purposes.

Finding the right name for the right plant is not always easy, and one plant species is often known with many different names. In addition, there is a lot of confusion and sometimes two very different plants are known with the same name. With hundreds of species and thousands of names, errors cannot be avoided and I apologize for any errors in the database; they are all mine.
