Ulvales

Ulvales is an order of green algae within the Chlorophyta, commonly found in marine and freshwater environments. These algae are usually bright green due to their high chlorophyll content and often grow as flat sheets, tubes, or filaments. They thrive in nutrient-rich coastal areas and are important components of intertidal and shallow subtidal ecosystems.

Ecologically, Ulvales species contribute to primary production, oxygen generation, and serve as habitat or food for aquatic animals. Some are harvested for food, fertilizers, or use in cosmetics. A well-known example is sea lettuce (Ulva spp.), which is consumed in various cuisines, especially in East Asia, and studied for its potential in sustainable aquaculture and bioproducts.
