Acmella

The genus Acmella belongs to the family Asteraceae (Aster family, Daisy family, Sunflower family, or Compositae).

The genus Acmella belongs to the sunflower family (Asteraceae) and includes small flowering herbs native to tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in the Americas. These plants are often low-growing with daisy-like yellow or orange flower heads and are closely related to the genus Spilanthes.

Several Acmella species are valued for their culinary, medicinal, and ornamental uses. The most well-known is Acmella oleracea, also known as toothache plant or electric daisy. It is used traditionally to relieve tooth pain due to its tingling, anesthetic effect and is also eaten in salads or teas for its unique numbing sensation.

The genus has growing interest in ethnobotany, herbal medicine, and functional foods, especially for its bioactive compound spilanthol.
