Aquifoliaceae

Aquifoliaceae belongs to the order Aquifoliales. It is also known as Holly family.

The Aquifoliaceae is a family of flowering plants best known for the genus Ilex, which includes the widely recognized hollies. These are primarily evergreen shrubs and small trees distributed across temperate and subtropical regions, especially in the Americas and East Asia. Members typically have leathery, often spiny leaves, small inconspicuous flowers, and brightly colored berries that persist into winter.

Ecologically, hollies provide important food for birds and shelter for wildlife, particularly in colder months. Culturally and economically, certain species are valued for ornamentation and traditional beverages. A prime example is Ilex paraguariensis, or yerba mate, whose leaves are harvested to make a stimulating herbal infusion popular in South America.
