Cannabaceae

Cannabaceae belongs to the order Rosales. It is also known as Hemp family.

The Cannabaceae is a small family of flowering plants primarily found in temperate and tropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It includes trees, shrubs, and climbing herbs, often with rough, serrated leaves and unisexual flowers. Formerly grouped with Moraceae and Urticaceae, this family has gained attention for its unique phytochemistry and historical uses in textiles, medicine, and recreation.

While small in number, Cannabaceae includes species of significant economic and cultural relevance. A prominent example is Cannabis sativa, cultivated for diverse purposes: industrial hemp (used in fibers, paper, and bioplastics), seeds for food and oil, and varieties with high cannabinoid content used medicinally and recreationally. The genus Humulus, including hops (Humulus lupulus), is also essential in brewing for flavor and aroma.
