Fagaceae

Fagaceae belongs to the order Fagales. It is also known as Beech family.

The Fagaceae, or beech family, is a group of flowering trees and shrubs found mainly in the Northern Hemisphere. These plants typically have simple, alternate leaves, unisexual flowers in catkins, and produce nuts enclosed in a scaly or spiny cupule. The family includes ecologically and economically important genera such as Quercus (oaks), Fagus (beeches), and Castanea (chestnuts).

A key commercial example is the European chestnut (Castanea sativa). These trees produce large, starchy nuts enclosed in spiny burrs, which are harvested for food. Chestnuts are cultivated in temperate regions for their edible nuts, which are eaten roasted, boiled, or ground into flour. The trees are also valued for their durable wood and role in traditional agroforestry systems.
