Abelmoschus

The genus Abelmoschus belongs to the family Malvaceae (Mallow family).

The genus Abelmoschus is part of the mallow family (Malvaceae). It comprises annual and perennial herbaceous plants native to tropical and subtropical Asia and Africa. Plants belonging to this genus used to be included within Hibiscus, but are now classified as Abelmoschus in a distinct genus. Its name means “father of musk” due to aromatic seeds.

Abelmoschus species are significant for food, traditional medicine, and industrial uses.

The most prominent species is Abelmoschus esculentus, widely known as okra or lady’s fingers. Other species, like A. moschatus, yield musky seeds for perfume, and A. manihot is grown for its edible leaves.
