Convolvulaceae

Convolvulaceae belongs to the order Solanales. It is also known as Bindweed family or Morning glory family.

The Convolvulaceae is a group of mostly twining vines, along with some herbs, shrubs, and small trees. Found around the world but especially diverse in tropical and subtropical regions, its members are known for their spiral growth, funnel-shaped flowers, and often heart-shaped leaves. Many thrive in open, sunny environments and are quick to colonize disturbed soils or fences, making them both ornamental and, at times, weedy.

This family includes plants with a variety of uses—from garden decoration to staple crops. A key example is Ipomoea batatas, the sweet potato, which is widely cultivated for its starchy, edible roots. Native to the Americas, sweet potatoes are now grown globally and valued for their nutritional content, including fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. Some members, however, like bindweeds, are considered agricultural pests due to their aggressive growth.
