Zingiberaceae

Zingiberaceae belongs to the order Zingiberales. It is also known as Ginger family.

The Zingiberaceae, or ginger family, is a large group of flowering plants that includes aromatic herbs with underground rhizomes. These plants are found mainly in tropical and subtropical regions, especially in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and parts of Africa and the Americas. They typically grow in moist forests, grasslands, and wetlands, often thriving in shaded, humid environments. Members of the family have distichous leaves (arranged in two vertical rows), tubular flowers with showy bracts, and a single fertile stamen. Many species are cultivated for their culinary, medicinal, or ornamental value.

A well-known example is Zingiber officinale, commonly called ginger. Native to South Asia, it is grown worldwide for its knobby rhizomes, which are used as a spice and herbal remedy. Ginger is prized for its pungent flavor and warming properties, and is used fresh, dried, or powdered in cooking, teas, and traditional medicine.
