Montiaceae

Montiaceae belongs to the order Caryophyllales. It is also known as Montia family or Spring beauty family.

The Montiaceae is a family of flowering plants that includes small herbs and low-growing shrubs. These plants are found across temperate and subtropical regions worldwide, with centers of diversity in western North America, South America, and Australia. Members of the family typically have fleshy leaves, simple flowers with five petals, and produce capsules as fruit. Many species are adapted to dry or rocky habitats, while others thrive in moist woodlands or alpine meadows.

Montiaceae species are often used as ornamentals in rock gardens and native plant landscapes. A notable commercial example is miner’s lettuce or winter purslane (Claytonia perfoliata), cultivated as a leafy green for salads due to its mild flavor and high vitamin C content.
