Hypericaceae

Hypericaceae belongs to the order Malpighiales. It is also known as St. John's Wort family.

The Hypericaceae is a group of flowering plants found in temperate and tropical regions around the world, except in extremely cold or arid habitats. These plants are typically herbs or shrubs with opposite leaves, often dotted with translucent or black glands, and bright yellow flowers with numerous stamens. The fruit is usually a dry capsule that splits open to release seeds.

A well-known example is Hypericum perforatum, or common St. John’s wort. Native to Europe but now widespread, it’s used in herbal medicine for its antidepressant properties, thanks to compounds like hypericin and hyperforin. However, it can also cause photosensitivity in livestock and interact with medications, so its use requires caution.
