Hericiaceae

Hericiaceae belongs to the order Russulales. It is also known as Tooth fungi family.

The Hericiaceae is a small family of fungi in the order Russulales, primarily known for its distinctive tooth fungi. Members of this family typically produce fruiting bodies with soft, fleshy textures and spines or “teeth” hanging from the undersides, rather than gills or pores. These fungi are saprobic, meaning they decompose dead wood, and are mostly found in temperate forests of the Northern Hemisphere.

A well-known species in this family is lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus). These fungi are not only striking in appearance—with cascading white spines resembling icicles or a lion’s mane—but are also valued for their culinary and medicinal properties. Hericium species are rich in bioactive compounds such as hericenones and erinacines, which have been studied for their potential neuroprotective and cognitive benefits.
