Chrysobalanaceae

Chrysobalanaceae belongs to the order Malpighiales. It is also known as Coco plum family.

The Chrysobalanaceae is a family of mostly tropical flowering plants, including trees and shrubs often found in lowland rainforests, riverbanks, and moist savannas. These plants typically have leathery, evergreen leaves, small clustered flowers, and fleshy, drupe-like fruits. Many species are adapted to nutrient-poor soils and help stabilize ecosystems through their deep-root systems and interactions with wildlife.

Several members produce edible or useful fruits. A notable example is Chrysobalanus icaco, commonly called cocoplum or icaco. Native to the Americas and Africa, this shrub or small tree bears round, pale to deep purple fruits with sweet flesh. It is eaten fresh, used in jams, or planted for erosion control and coastal landscaping. Its tolerance to salty soils and wind makes it popular in seaside gardens.
