Urticaceae

Urticaceae belongs to the order Rosales. It is also known as Nettle family.

The Urticaceae is a diverse family of flowering plants that includes herbs, shrubs, and small trees found across tropical and temperate regions. These plants often grow in forests, disturbed areas, and along streams, with some adapted to dry or rocky habitats. While many species have stinging hairs, others do not. The flowers are typically small and wind-pollinated, and the fruits are usually dry achenes. Several members are cultivated for food, fiber, or medicinal use.

A well-known example is Boehmeria nivea, commonly called ramie or China grass. Native to East and Southeast Asia, it is a tall perennial herb grown for its strong, silky fibers extracted from the inner bark of its stems. These fibers are used in textiles, paper, and industrial products due to their durability and resistance to wrinkling. Ramie lacks stinging hairs and is sometimes used ornamentally.
