Sichuan Pepper
Sichian pepper is a spice. It has a flavor that is not hot or sharp like black pepper or chili peppers. Instead it creates a numbness on the tongue and lips, with a tingling, almost electrical sensation.
It originates from China’s Sichuan province, which explains the name. Several species in the genus Zanthoxylum (including Zanthoxylum piperitum, Zanthoxylum simulans and Zanthoxylum bungeanum) produce the spice called Sichuan pepper.
